In Northern Virginia alone, there are currently more than 22,000 people estimated to suffer from Alzheimer's disease. More than 7 out of 10 people live at home where family and friends provide approximately 10% of their care. Their caregivers often make great sacrifices, essentially sharing the journey of the illness with their loved one. At Alzheimer's Family Day Center (AFDC),
we have learned that caregiving is both a science and an
art. Since 1984, we have been providing relief to caregivers
in Northern Virginia through our adult day care center,
support groups and educational programs. Let us be your
first resource. Caregiving Links - We've listed a few publications and organizations with useful information for caregivers on our links page. Caregiving at a Glance is AFDC's fingertip guide for families caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's. Two distinct versions are available - free of charge for family members (limited to one copy per household) and at a modest fee for professionals caring for people with an Alzheimer's-type illness. Techniques and strategies to empower caregivers address topics such as: troublesome behaviors, communication, eating, bathing and more. To order your copy, print and mail the order form or call us at 703-204-4664. Caregiver Education and Training - AFDC offers drop-in classes and caregiver training courses throughout the year. Be sure to check out our calendar for a complete listing of upcoming events. Next series starts August 4. Virginia Caregivers Grant - provides annual grants of up to $500 to caregivers who provide care to a needy relative without reimbursement. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
